Cass Nakasone is a graduate of Punahou School and received undergraduate degrees in Physics & Mathematics from Whitman College and an Engineering and Applied Science degree from the California Institute of Technology.  He earned a Masters Degree in Mechanical Engineering from Stanford University where an interest in engineering applications in medicine altered his academic plans.  In 1998, he graduated from the John A. Burns School of Medicine, completed his orthopedic residency program at the University of Hawaii and subsequently completed specialty training in knee and hip replacement surgery at the University of Southern California before returning to Honolulu.  In 2005, Dr. Nakasone joined the Straub Medical Center (SMC) and served as Chief of Orthopedics from 2006 until 2018.  He currently serves as the Chief of Surgical Services and Chief of Orthopedics at SMC.  

Dr. Nakasone currently serves as an Associate Clinical Professor for the University of Hawaii Orthopedic Residency Program and the Director of Arthroplasty Research for the Division of Research and Innovation at the Bone and Joint Center at SMC. 

Over the course of his career thus far, he has performed over 3000 total knee and over 3000 direct anterior approach total hip replacements and has served as faculty instructor for surgical courses throughout the west coast and Japan related to partial knee, total knee and total hip replacement surgery.  Dr. Nakasone has hosted surgeons from Japan, Australia, India and the U.S. who want to see advanced techniques in joint replacement surgery.  Since 2005, he has co-authored 25 peer reviewed journal articles and 47 scientific abstracts related to knee and hip replacement surgery.  He has served as surgical design consultant for three implant systems and is involved in several research studies evaluating surgical technologies.
