Clinical Practice

Dr. Harpstrite’s practice focuses on joint reconstruction, sports medicine and fracture surgery. This entails the complete care of all of the joints critical to an active lifestyle. He specializes in arthroscopic, as well as complex joint reconstruction procedures to keep patients at the highest levels of performance. His joint replacement practice consists of shoulder, hip, and knee replacement surgery. He is well trained in all aspects of joint replacement surgery and specializes both in minimal incision, as well as traditional joint replacement techniques. Dr. Harpstrite is one of the few surgeons performing anterior approach total hip replacement in the state. This involves a novel approach to hip replacement that allows precise implant placement with out cutting any muscles. Anterior approach allows a shorter hospital stay and a faster recovery with fewer complications. Not everyone is a candidate and some patients will be better served with a different approach. Dr. Harpstrite can customize the surgery for what will work best for each individual patient.

Dr. Harpstrite’s sports medicine practice is focused on a customized approach to each individual patient, offering complete care of the injured athlete, from sprains and tears to broken bones. Dr. Harpstrite regularly attends to injuries to the upper extremities (shoulders, elbows, and wrists), as well as the lower extremities (hips, knees, and ankles).

He has been active in sports in the community of Hawaii as the team physician for PAC-5 football, as well as caring for much of the ocean sports community, triathletes, runners and bikers throughout the state. He also coaches youth soccer (AYSO and HYSA), and basketball (KBA and KYAC). Dr. Harpstrite is an active clinical faculty member of the University of Hawaii John A. Burns School of Medicine and is an Associate Clinical Professor of Orthopedic Surgery at the University of Hawaii. He has been widely published and regularly makes presentations throughout the local community.

Dr. Harpstrite was born and raised in Hawaii. He grew up in Kaneohe and graduated from the University Laboratory School in 1983. He attended college at the University of Colorado Boulder and graduated with a degree in Molecular Cellular Development Biology in 1987. He returned to Hawaii for medical school and graduated from the John A. Burns School of Medicine in 1991. He completed a general surgery internship and a four-year residency at the University of Hawaii Orthopedic Surgical Residency. He completed subspecialty training with fellowships at the University of Texas Southwestern in Dallas, as well as the University of Washington Harborview Medical Center in Seattle, Washington. He was active duty United States Army and served as the Chief of Orthopedic Trauma and Assistant Chief of Sports Medicine and Joint Replacement at the Tripler Army Medical Center from 1996 to 2000. He is married to Dr. Amy Harpstrite, who is a pediatrician in Kailua. They have three children. He is an avid surfer, windsurfer, triathlete and plays basketball and soccer. Where there is some spare time he enjoys painting and ceramics.
